Have a Well Adjusted Christmas!

With all the Holiday stress we go through, I can't imagine anyone that needs a chiropractor more than Saint Nick!

T’WAS JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS

T’was just before Christmas, but there was no cheer.
No jingle bells jingled, no sound of reindeer.
The word had gone out that Santa was sick.
There would be no visit from jolly St. Nick.

The people were sad; no gaiety sounded.
For Christmas was coming but Santa was grounded.
He drove down the road, and what should he see?
But a sign for a doctor, who was a D.C.

Now Santa wasn’t one to like a new tactic,
But all else had failed, so he tried Chiropractic.
He entered the office and saw at a glance,
in a place such as this, illness hasn’t a chance.

The office staff smiled, the music was snappy,
with all of the patients contented and happy.
In a very short time, to judge by the clock,
he was in the adjusting room, talking to Doc.

It must be the hurry, the tension and all,
I simply can’t seem to get on the ball.
Life used to be easy; just kids, toys and whistles,
now I dodge smog, spaceships and missiles!

And Doc, take a look at the size of this pack!
Have you any idea what it does to my back?
Poor Santa was miserable and just barely able,
with the help of the Doctor, to get on the table.

The Doctor was gentle; without a fuss or tussle
he examined the vertebrae and relaxed every muscle.
He spotted trouble and then with a click,
started aligning the spine of St. Nick.

Santa felt aches and pains slip away
and in no time at all he began to feel gay
The air was a tingle with new fallen snow
and a healthy Kris Kringle was rarin’ to go.

                                                                As he went out the door, he threw them a kiss;
why, it had been centuries since he felt like this!
Then once more he shouldered the bag full of toys,
his heart overflowing with true Christmas joys.

So, may we, your friends, echo this cheer?

Merry Christmas to you and to all a good year!

                                                                Author unknown.  Original poem modified.

Have a safe and Happy Holiday from Coastal Chiropractic!

Inflammation: Good or Bad?

Trick question. But that also means whatever you answered you are probably right (unless you said "I don't know).

Inflammation is the body's natural response to promote healing after injury or damage to the body. In this case, acute inflammation, it is GOOD.

When acute inflammation becomes chronic inflammation it is BAD. Chronic inflammation has been associated with cancer, diabetes, depression, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's. Is that a big enough list for you?

How does chronic inflammation start in the body and how can you avoid it?

1. Eat - You are what you eat. You are either increasing the inflammation in your body by your diet or decreasing inflammation. Avoid excess grains, soda, sugars, hydrogenated oils, packaged foods, and dairy. Eat fruits and vegetables, fish, grass fed meat, nuts, spices (ginger, turmeric, garlic) red or sweet potatoes, and drink lots of water.

2. Stress - an increase the in the hormone cortisol due to stress has been linked to increase in obesity and inflammation. Decrease stress by getting enough sleep and exercise.

3. Probiotics - Research has shown that a good probiotic can decrease inflammation in the gut and throughout the body.

The most common symptom of chronic inflammation we see in the office is PAIN. Often with some nutritional support and supplements we can reverse the chronic inflammation in the body and allow the body to heal properly.

they would cut the last two chapters.

My wife would agree with that statement 100%. We just welcomed our second child into the world last week! We are so happy to have him in our arms, especially my wife. Those last two chapters were not comfortable. Low back pain, rib pain, and varicose veins make it difficult to be comfortable any time. It has been reported that approximately 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during their pregnancy and 50% to 75% of women experience back pain during labor.

healthy. well hydrated person. water molecule. wet. There are lots of ways to finish the sentence. How important is water?
  • Muscle consists of 75% water
  • Brain consists of 90% of water
  • Bone consists of 22% of water
  • Blood consists of 83% water
  • Every cell in your body needs water, head to toe, to function properly

Here are ten important benefits of drinking enough water

  1. Lose weight: Drinking water helps you lose weight because it flushes down the by-products of fat breakdown. Drinking water reduces hunger and it’s an effective appetite suppressant so you’ll eat less. Plus, water has zero calories.
  2. Natural Remedy for Headache: Helps to relieve headache and back pains due to dehydration. Although many reasons contribute to headache, dehydration is the common one.
  3. Look Younger with Healthier Skin: You’ll look younger when your skin is properly hydrated. Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes skin and increases skin elasticity.
  4. Better Exercise: Drinking water regulates your body temperature. That means you’ll feel more energetic when doing exercises. Water also helps to fuel your muscle.
  5. Helps in Digestion and Constipation: Drinking water raises your metabolism because it helps with digestion. Fiber and water goes hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement.
  6. Less Cramps and Sprains: Proper hydration helps keep your joints and muscles lubricated, so you’ll less likely get cramps and sprains.
  7. Less Likely to Get Sick and Feel Healthy: Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu and other ailments like kidney stones and heart attack. Water with lemon is used for ailments like respiratory disease, intestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis etc. In another words one of the benefits of drinking water is that it can improve your immune system.
  8. Relieves Fatigue: Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body. If your body lacks water, your heart, for instance, needs to work harder to pump out the oxygenated blood to all cells, so are the rest of the vital organs, your organs will be exhausted and so will you.
  9. Good Mood: Your body feels very good and that’s why you feel happy.
  10. Keep Spinal Discs Healthy. Intervertebral discs consist largely of water (at birth, discs are about eighty percent water, although this usually declines with age). Therefore, keeping the body well hydrated by drinking water regularly is important to nourish the spinal discs and help keep them healthy.

Do you have good hygiene?

How is your hygiene? I recently went to the dentist for a teeth cleaning and check up. No cavities, yay! The dental hygienist said that I have healthy gums and teeth (she also said I have a nice smile, but I think they say that to everyone). So, what's the difference between no cavities and hippo man pictured above? Easy answer, brush and floss everyday.

As I was getting my teeth cleaned the parallels between dental hygiene and spinal hygiene were too large to ignore. Avoid cavities (pain/back surgeries) by brushing and flossing (moving/stretching) and getting regular check ups and cleaning (chiropractic adjustments).
Picture
The difference between  a healthy back and one that suffers from pain is in the day to day care of the spine. If you are in pain or know someone in pain, the good news is that there is help! We focus on getting people out of pain and teaching proper spinal hygiene to keep the pain away.

Our bodies are designed to move and be pain free. Everyone deserves to enjoy life. If a joint or muscle is hurting, it is because something is not right with the alignment of the joints or muscles. The first thing we do with new patients is check the posture. This gives us clues on where the real problem is coming from. Once corrected, the pain goes away!

Call today to get your alignment checked and prevent pain!

I have a terrible weakness. I love chocolate. I have a hard time saying no to chocolate. I try to justify my guilt by finding research about the health benefits of chocolate. click here

I know I shouldn't eat the amount of chocolate I do. Fortunately I've found a substitute that will change me forever. Raw brownies! I have to give credit to my friend Aaron who introduced me a couple weeks ago. I've been hooked ever since. If you google "raw brownie recipes" there are a bunch and I'm still experimenting with which I like best.

The best way to improve our health is through small changes that will last. Starting a diet does no good if you don't stick with it. Make lasting changes by changing small habits. I eat healthier brownies now. Small change, but it will have a lasting impact on me and my family. Drinking more water is another simple change we can all apply to our lives. Drinking more water has incredible health benefits. Click here to see some.  How do you make those changes?

One step at a time. Here are some more tips to help with your healthy habit changes. What will you change to improve your health? Exercise? Diet? Mental stress? You decide!

Health Care vs. Sick Care

3/18/2012

_  To properly debate health care vs. sick care we need to define health. What is health to you?

The World Health Organization gives a splendid definition.

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

America spends more per person (roughly $7,500) on health care than any other country in the world, for a total of 2.26 trillion dollars. That means we should be the healthiest country in the world, right? Not even close. We rank 42nd in the world in life expectancy. The leading causes of death in America are heart disease, cancer, lower respiratory , stroke, and diabetes. We are dying younger than 41 other countries that spend less on health care than us because we are not preventing the disease, but treating the symptoms.

Picture
_  I’m not against taking medications recommended by your primary care physician. I’m against taking medications from your doctor with no plans to change your life to become healthier. On the website of Lipitor (one of the leading prescription drugs in America) it says:

Atorvastatin (Lipitor) is used along with diet, exercise, and weight-loss to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and to decrease the chance that heart surgery will be needed in people who have heart disease or who are at risk of developing heart disease.

Taking a medication to cover up the symptoms but not fix the CAUSE of the problem is part of the health care problem in America today. We are not healthy because we are looking for a quick fix. Diet, exercise, and weight loss are not the quick easy road to health. It is a lot easier to take a pill, but that does not fix the real problem. Lifestyle changes have to be made.

Chiropractic has a similar philosophy. We look to correct the CAUSE of the problem, not to cover up the pain with medication. Once the CAUSE is corrected, there is no problem!

Read the definition of health above again. Are you healthy? What do you need to do to become healthy?
